Dr. Lemma has been studying the place of the body in psychic life for many years. She has considered the clinical, conceptual and ethical implications of body modification, the impact of technological developments, virtual reality and transgender. A few years ago, she decided to study applied ethics, and in this program she will be sharing some personal reflections born of her work on applied ethics. Specifically, she will discuss the relationship of applied ethics to her ongoing work with transgender adolescents and adults, some of whom go on to medical transitioning. She will address transgender from a primarily bioethical perspective informed by psychoanalysis in the hope that it allows us to engage with some of the issues from a different angle. Following Dr. Lemma’s didactic presentation, Dr. Ira Brenner will offer some reflections on her work and facilitate a discussion with attendees.
