Hope is a theme that runs through the analytic dialogue, often silently but insistently, to promote the goals of the treatment. In these difficult times, when analysts are faced with unprecedented challenges to our physical safety in the pandemic and the safety of our democracy, we consider how to promote hope for ourselves and our patients. In this presentation we consider the intersubjective experience of treating desperate suicidal patients in the context of exploring the meaning of transference/countertransference communications. Hope is crucial to such treatments. Hope issimilarly essential to maintaining our analytic practice in the face of adversity and a culture that denies truth. There is a connection between the hope provided to suicidal patients in their time of distress and hope that we hold on to when we feel our values are threatened.

Join us after the forum at 12:00 pm for a virtual luncheon with Dr. Goldblatt!
