Time: 1:00 pm EDT - 3:00 pm EDT

In this formal Forum presentation, Dr. Bolognini will explore three things: 1) a personal experience that reflects his ideas about how pivotal auditory processing and sound is to our experience and memory of strong affects, 2) the varied experiences that patients feel when the analyst is silent; and 3) how the experience of hearing assumes decisive importance for the analytic process of a patient impacted by a traumatic loss.

The presentation will be in a lecture format, introducing students to the basic model of analytic listening using a psychodynamic theoretical framework. Dr. Bolognini will consider developments in theory and practice and work on analytic listening within a psychodynamic framework. A complex model of the interaction between sensation and analytic process integrating interactions, psychological structuring, biological models of complexity, and social and cultural theories will be elaborated. Clinical examples will be developed to illustrate how powerful forces of affect and cognition co-exist, sometimes conflictually and sometime comfortably and creatively. Small break-out group discussion will allow for closer consideration of the application of the material to case work.
