This latest installment of the case conference series “Analytic Principles for the Real World” focuses on the special topic of treating substance abuse from a psychodynamic perspective. PCOP member Sheila Lynch, MA, will present a patient from her work at a community mental health center to discussant Fred Bauer, MD, seasoned analyst and PCOP faculty member. Discussion will focus on psychodynamic technique and case formulation as it applies to treating substance abuse, demonstrating the relevance of classical analytic principles to psychotherapy today—even when working with difficult patient populations and clinical settings different from those often presented in analytic literature. This discussion will provide practical examples of “what to say, when” in psychotherapy that attendees can apply to their own clinical work.

Upon registration, attendees will receive a PDF of Dr. Bauer’s paper “From Addiction to Wellness: A Person-Centered Psychotherapeutic Approach” to provide an introduction to key concepts prior to the conference.
